CHECK AND SCAN

Playing with the head up (Check, Scan, Vision, Awareness) is one of the most important techniques players need to develop.

The more time a player can focus on the game, the options and the spaces, rather than just the ball, the easier the game is to play.

Playing with the head up allows players to see more and to see things earlier. This leads to faster and more intelligent play.

CHECK AND SCAN

Using the Head Up Decision Beep Test [HUDBT]

The videos below show how the ability to interact with the ball, whilst also getting the head up can be developed.

This is done using a HUDBT video.

In these videos, there is an instruction on the screen (which the payer needs to constantly check) which lasts for a set period of time (5 seconds say). A set lasts a minute followed by a short rest. Then in the next set, the instructions may only last for 4 seconds.  The set after that 3 seconds. So the exercise slowly gets harder and harder.

The question is : At what point does a player struggle to keep up.

HOW TO USE THE HUDBT

RUNNING WITH THE BALL ONLY

Using the green block version of the HUDBT.
Exercise Level #1 : 5 seconds per picture

Use an 'Inside step Inside Shuffle' footwork pattern to move the ball around the cone that corresponds with the picture on the screen.

Vary the footwork pattern used and try to get up to as high a level as possible.

RUNNING WITH AND PASSING THE BALL

Use the green block version of the HUDBT.
Exercise Level #1 : 5 seconds per picture

Move the ball round cones when the picture is in the middle or bottom of the screen .

When the picture is in the TOP of the screen then pass the ball. This also then forces a check of the shoulder.

3 TOUCH : INSIDE OUTSIDE PASS CHECK

Use the #1-#2-#3 version of the HUDBT
to test how well you can play with an 'Inside Outside pass pattern'.

Add in a check and a scan, and a decision.

In this exercise,  face forward throughout, and the distance from the rebounders is about a couple of meters.

MAKE THE EXERCISES HARDER

To get the full variety of HUDBT videos then use the link below.

Level # 1 videos usually start at 5 second per picture.
At Advanced levels this comes down to as low as 1 second between pictures.

Using HUDBT is one of the best methods a player can use to combine
technique, speed, endurance, scanning and checking and decision making
when working alone.

If you believe that developing the ability to play with the head up is important and you would like to test this ability further then use the links below.
