- FBs take throw-ins.
- FBs role in a slow switch.
- FBs role in an aggressive switch.
- FB Positioning defensively : When to get tight ; When to tuck in : When to play on the six line.
Essentail technical things FBs need to master.
When receiving the ball off a center back.
- Pitch Position :
- Never stand right on the touch line. (as you restrict the amount of space you can play in).
- Step in a meter or 2 , so that you have some outside space to play with.
- Use a Dummy touch
- Kill the touch so it stays right next to your strong foot
- It's called a dummy touch because you deliberately want the defender to come straight towards the ball (over commit).
- Be comfortable facing the press
- If you face the press, this makes it easier to go left of right (relative to the press).
- Once the defender over commits (in one direction) - pop to the space (get to a better space) and start the next phase of play.
- Never rush to the pass.
- Win the battle for space before anything else.
- Keep the ball on the safe side (Protective ball movement).
- If the defender is still close hide the ball on the safe side of the body. Keep moving to a safer space & use space to escape to a better space.
- Never put the ball on the press side.
- Note : 1v1 moves work whether you have you face the defender (show the ball) or have your back to them (hid ethe ball)....... It is possible to still fake inside & then pop to the outside.
- Establish basic passing rules
- Don't rush to the pass (make sure you have opened up the passing line before you hit the pass)
- Hide the pass : Don't make the pass obvious as defenders will block the passing line, so move defenders away form the passing line, before hitting the pass you want. This may involve playing with the space more (if available) to draw players to the ball rather than cover passing lines, move the ball to create better passing angles
- there are good passes and bad passes so always ask the question : Was the pass the right pass? Was a pass necessary? A pass should improve the position of the ball. A pass should give the receiver an way out. A pass should never make the moment harder for the receiver.
- Advanced players give receiving players a pass out (Can the receiving player going to do something good with the pass.....Did the pass solve the receiving players problem for them?
- Establish First touch rules
- If in doubt your first touch should be towards the safest space (and then play from there)
- If the ball is rolling to a safe space - let it roll => your first touch is no touch.
- Remember that using space (before the pass) buys time for better movement from team-mates.
- Vertical passes rule. (Rules about switch initiation
- Playing vertical passes into a congested space is difficult.
- If you look forward and see congested space think about about initiating the switch (see notes on switching).
