Develop a Developmental System of Play.
A 'development orientated' system of play tries to maximize each player's opportunity to apply the 'first principles of technique'.
Systems of play that are direct, pragmatic and focus on results (before a well rounded developmental approach) will not always provide the best environment in which to maximize the opportunities to apply the 'first principles of technique', and therefore consequently fail to maximize the development of the players playing under such a system.
Such a system may work for adults who have plateaued in terms of development, but if applied to young developing players, it either robs them of potentially good development opportunities, or says to the players that results are more important than maximizing the development process and that short term success is more important than maximizing long term developmental gains.
An analogy might be compared to the choice between a diet of party-food or a well rounded diet.
One might be more fun right now, but one is definitely much better for you in the long run.
