A Model for Youth Development  : System of Play Notes.

Reading the play if the opposition need to just clear the ball

and who have 2 high forwards.

1. Make a defensive 'shape'  still defends:

  • The vertical lines.
  • The line to the goal and covers.
  • The line to the wide space.

2. Players also adopts positions that maximise the chance that we win a clearance :

  • Players are tight in front (of the opposition forwards) :
  • CBs Anticipate balls over the top : Get the feet ready, drop fractionally early and defend loose if players are tight in front.

3. Goalkeeper ready to sweep

Note : If the opposition set up differently or do something different (EG don't just boot it clear or set up their forwards differently) then the defensive set up will need to change .
