NEW COACHES : READ THESE NOTES
#1 : When coaching a new group always start with a simple game. This allows you to see the level of the players and allows you pitch the session appropriately. You cant turn up with a fixed plan and then get upset wit the players when the plan doesn't work.
#2 : Young (beginner players) primarily need to enjoy the session. It should feel more like a collection of 'playground' games rather than a training session. Think about playground games that kids play. Use these as a base.
#3 : Avoid spending much time on boring practice. Young players do not care if they cant pass a ball - they do care about playing and winning fun little games. If players need to improve their passing - play a game where good passes are rewarded. Same with control. Same running wit the ball. Same with shooting.
#4 : TST '2v1' is the base from which we teach the 'game'. 'Do I pass or do I run with the ball?' . This should be a very important part of every session. Note : A TST 2v1 restricts the attackers options [Use 2 goals - one for each attacker - attackers can only score in their goal. Always : If defenders we the ball and the ball stays in play the defenders must try to score or escape (give them 4 escape options).
#5 : TST '1v1's are used to educate players about space. 1v1s are a race to space (not about moves). Moves are used to get a head start - that's all. We don't teach moves ! We develop Footwork - the ability to move the ball quickly and efficiently from one space to another, whilst watching the defending to work out where the advantage is.
#6 : 2v2s offer players a chance to shows us how well they can put all the above into a game.
