Fundamental Footwork Patterns : Learn these first.
In regards to ball moving exercises : Be creative : The examples below are just ideas. They don' t have to be practiced this way.
Why use cones : Cones are a constraint on time and space. If a players touch is bad - the cones will let them know.
Footwork is also further developed whilst playing games: 1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s etc help reinforce the footwork done using cones.
In terms of levels Drag back -> touch Ball mastery is level 1 : Drag Back U is level 2 : Using a square is Level 3.
Levels go up to #7 : The key is to match the exercise to level of your group so it is a doable challenge.
Players should learn these 4 Patterns First
If a forward touch is added after an Inside switch Outside, this will then naturally add another FFP into the practice: That is : An Outside step Inside.
So the combined pattern becomes : Inside switch Outside step Inside
If a forward touch is added after an Inside switch Outside, this will then naturally add another FFP into the practice: That is : An Outside step Inside.
So the combined pattern becomes : Inside step Outside step Inside
These patterns above ( along with other FFPs) can be added to a Drag Back. Players at footwork level #1-3 could do these either without conesas a foot shapes / ball mastery warm up or with cones (zig Zag) as a race.[ Check out all thepages in teh able above].
Game Functional : Basic Exercise
A simple way to look at FFPs is :
By the Direction the ball is moved relative to facing forward.
- Forward only
- Lateral Only
- Lateral Forward
- Fake lateral
- V
- Turn
Note : Almost all footwork patterns can be simplified into one of these 6 categories.
